Currently, it attracts the third largest number of international students in the English-speaking world after the US and the UK. Nepal is no exception – in fact Australia is the number one destination for Nepali students. Have you ever wondered why? What is it that makes Australia so attractive? This article, a first in a series dedicated about education in Australia will describe the reasons behind this massive exodus of students to the land down under. An excellence in Education and Innovation The Australian approach to vocational and technical education is now recognized as among the best and most innovative in the world. It enjoys an international reputation for excellence in all areas of education and training. Australian universities are widely recognized for excellence in many disciplines, among which finances and management, nursing and health sciences, and IT are especially favored by Nepali students. Australian institutions deliver practical and career-orientated training so graduates can be confident they have the skills demanded by employers. It has played an important role in Australia's economic performance, by greatly increasing the skill of workers and contributing to improved productivity. Australian educational institutions adopt new technologies at a faster rate than in most other countries. Facilities for teaching, training and research are world-class in terms of state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms, outstanding libraries and modern technology. Students are encouraged to interact, be creative, think outside the box, and ask questions. This educational system has the proud achievement of having produced ten Nobel Prize winners, nine of which were for science or medicine and one for literature in addition to many of today’s finest thinkers. Global Recognition Australian qualifications are recognized by employers and leading educational institutions in many countries around the world. Most courses and training undertaken by international students in Australia are covered by Australian Qualification Framework (AQF). The AQF links school, vocational and university qualifications, making it easier to progress to the next AQF level anywhere in Australia. The AQF also makes it easy for overseas governments to recognize your qualification. When international employers see it, they know what it stands for: a world class education in a modern, democratic and technologically advanced society. In addition, many university courses are accredited by the global professional bodies – for example the accounting courses at reputed universities are recognized by the ACCA and CPA. Assurance: Quality and Reliability Australia is one of the few countries that can really guarantee the quality of education and safety of your investment. In 2000, Australia introduced the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act. ESOS ensures that, in order to enroll international students, institutions must first meet requirements for registration. All institutions which meet registration requirements are listed on the publicly available Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). That means institutions that have not met a quality standard will not be able to admit foreign students at all. And unlike Nepal, the quality is monitored stringently and frequently. Institutions must ensure that the marketing materials (such as brochures and handbooks) they provide to international students are accurate and not misleading. Institutions must support international students in adjusting to study and life in Australia, achieving their learning goals and satisfying the learning outcomes of their course. The ESOS act also mandates the Tuition Protection Services, through which your fees are protected. If, for some reason University discontinues your course, then your tuition fees will be reimbursed, or an equivalent university will allow you to continue your education. Because of this, financial security is assured. Governmental and Institutional Support Education institutions in Australia are among some of the best in the world offering modern and innovative facilities that will ensure your time as a student is positive and valuable, preparing you for a successful career in your chosen field. Student support forms a large part of Australia’s education system. Institutions take their responsibility to student welfare seriously. They provide specialist services to help international students adjust to life and study in Australia and to achieve their goals. This includes student services such as language tuition, designated international student advisers, on- arrival reception and orientation programs, health, personal and career counseling, accommodation and employment services. A large number of students bodies work towards maintaining both the educational as well as personal well- being of the international students. Australia is one of the very few countries that have such a rigorous support program in place. Job Opportunities Australia offers work permits to international students like no other country. You are allowed to work up to forty hours per fortnight during your session and full time during vacation. You can work within the campus or off campus. If you are a married person, and your dependent accompanies you, then he or she can work part time, if you are bachelors’ degree student and full time if you are masters’ degree student. Your student visa information is automatically available to potential employers and banks so that job and payments are all officiated. Working students are covered by Australian workplace law and practices. When you have completed your study you are allowed to work up to 2 years for bachelors and masters graduate, 3 years for Masters in Research and 4 years for MPD under post study work. Your Australian degree will allow you to compete anywhere in the world. In addition, the Australian Government skilled migration program targets young people who have skills, an education and outstanding abilities that will contribute to the Australian economy. International students with Australian qualifications account for about half the people assessed under the skilled migrant program. As a qualified graduate, you can choose to make your future in Australia itself. The best investment for your future success The excellence in Education, the multicultural background of students, value for money, English speaking country and on top of that, Governmental and institution support for international students are some other aspects that has made Australia a very attractive destination for students from all over the world. One excellent advantage for Nepali students is the similarity between Nepali and Australian education systems, which are broadly patterned on the British education system. When required, bridging or foundation courses are provided to help students transition between the studies. An education from Australia prepares you to compete in the global marketplace. To reach the level of quality in education, Nepal will still take dozens of years at the least. An investment in an Australian education is an investment for your future. No matter what discipline you are interested in, Australian universities provide a coursework that suits your needs, aptitudes and finances. Australia is indeed the best destination for students from Nepal who want to pursue an international education.
